A Scene from a classic novel "Oguri Hangan" written by Monzaemon CHIKAMATSU (1653 – 1724). Poster size 90 x 44 cm.

The picture was painted by Toyokuni Utagawa 111, an Ukiyo-e painter, as a typical scene of Kabuki. Poster size

Outline of story: Oguri was a very violent bad tempered man who was expelled from the capital, (Kyoto). While travelling he met an only daughter of Yokoyama who was the head of a powerful clan (family) named Terute. He seduced her . Yokoyama got very angry with Oguri and poisoned him. Of course Terute was expelled from the clan and thought she would now have to live her life as a prostitute, however she still loved Oguri, so she took his dead body to Kumano to an Onsen (hot spring) where she bathed him & he recovered. They married and became very respectable people in the community.

He was finally enshrined as a god of violence an Mino present day Seki ken and she became a goddess of marriage. The shrine still exists today and is visited by many people. Chikamatsu expresses the character of Oguri, as a symbol of ethical violence.

Oguri was a master of military accomplishments, especially of horse riding . The picture shows a demonstration by Oguri riding a spirited horse on a "Go-Board" in front of Yokoyama, his daughter and all the leading members of the clan. The size of a go board is about 17" square.

BAKIN TAKIZAWA (1767-1848) was one of the greatest novelists born in Japan. Poster size 71 x 53 cm.

The "Satomi Hakken-den. 8 dogs legend was his life’s work and this long tale was described in 106 books.

The outline of the tale:

There was a beautiful girl born in a high ranking Samurai family. Due to a dispute among the family, she went out of the house into the mountains where she married a wild dog and bore 8 male dogs, they were men in the daytime & dogs in the night time, and of course brothers but did not know as they were scattered through out Japan.

Sometimes they fought with vicious feudal lords on behalf of poor people, and gained the respect of people through out the country and of course became entwined in love and romance. Eventually they became aware of each other & knew of their parentage and their common mother and eventually returned to a normal human livelihood.

The fantastic idea was the reason that this novel became so popular throughout the Edo period 1603-1868 and even into the Meiji era.

Battle scene on grey ground. In the middle of the 15th Century in Japan it was the time of civil wars. There was an Emperor in Japan, but he was only nominal and had no power to reign over the whole country. There were about 20 Daimyo (Generals) in those days throughout Japan who were constantly fighting one another for the power to rule the country. The most prominent and influential General among them being Shingen TAKEDA (1521-1573). From Yamanashi Ken on the left with the war fan and Kenshin UESUGI (1530 –1578) from Niigata Ken on the right with the sword. Up to the end of the 15th Century, there were no guns being used the main weapons were swords, spears, bows & arrows & naginata.

The battle between them at Kwanaka Jima , in which a total of 30,000 soldiers from both sides fought, was regarded as one of the bloodiest battles in Japanese history. The number of casualties was said to be 50%.

This picture shows Kenshin UESUGI on his horse cutting his way into the headquarters of the enemy using his fan as a shield and being attacked by Shingen Takeda himself. One of the highlights of battle in Japanese history.
